Alfredo James Pacino, widely known as Al Pacino is a celebrated American actor, screenwriter, and filmmaker. He is also an actor who introduced method acting to the Hollywood film industry.

Pacino learned his acting skills from Lee Strasberg in New York City. He has been contributing to the film industry with more than fifty films over the fifty years.

Born on 25th April 1940 in East Harlem of New York City, Al Pacino was raised by his mother, Rose Gerardi after her divorce in 1942. Meanwhile, his father, Salvatore Pacino managed a restaurant and also worked for an Insurance company.

However, he left his home after a heated argument with his mother. He spent his teenhood sleeping at his friends’, in theaters and sometimes even on the streets.

Later, he began working as a janitor, messenger, postal clerk and busboy to pay for his acting classes.


Unfortunately, Pacino had a troublesome childhood. He started drinking and smoking from an early age of nine and never completed his school! He dropped out when he was 17.

However, he studied acting for four years at HB Studio, where he trained as a method actor by Lee Strasberg, who he considers his one of the major source of inspiration.


Al Pacino received an amount of $125 for a week performance in ‘Awake and Sing!’.  Martin Bregman witnessed Pacino’s talent in play, “The Indian Wants the Bronx” on 17th January 1968.

Then, he became Pacino’s manager, guiding him throughout his early career. Pacino played in several onstage performances, ‘Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie?’, ‘American Buffalo’ and ‘Richard III.’ He had won two Tony awards by that time.


Pacino always loved and enjoyed acting. He entered into film acting with ‘Me, Natalie’ after gaining success from stage performances.  Director Francis Ford Coppola was looking for the casts for his upcoming movie ‘The Godfather.’ It was Pacino’s acting in ‘The Panic in Needle Park,’ which drew an attention of Francis Coppola. The director decided to cast novel  Pacino as ‘Michael Corleone’  rejecting  Robert Redford, Robert De Niro, and Jack Nicholson, who were one of the leading actors of that time.

Notably, this mafia film had a huge success earning  Pacino millions of fans and opening his gates to work with best directors resulting into the films like Scarecrow(1973) which won him the Palme d’Or award.

Within three years Pacino won the nomination for OSCAR three times for Serpico(1973), The Godfather Part II(1974) and Dog Day Afternoon(1975).

Despite his two highly criticized film ‘Cruising’ and ‘Author! Author!’, he managed to achieve critical applaud from his next film ‘Scarface'(1983). It was a huge success at the box office collecting around US$65.9 million worldwide.  In 1989, he received further praises for his detective role in ‘Sea of Love.’

Pacino did two films in 1990; ‘Dick Tracy’ and ‘The Godfather III.’ The former got him nominated for OSCAR again for the role as Big Boy Caprice. Over the next twenty-five years, he played over twenty-three movies of which only about a dozen gained positive reviews.

In addition to that, his significant works include ‘Scent of a Woman,’ ‘Carlito’s Way,’ ‘Heat,’ ‘The Devil’s Advocate’ and ‘Donnie Brasco,’ ‘Insomnia’ ’88 minutes’, ‘Ocean’s Thirteen,’ ‘Righteous Kill’ and ‘Phil Spector.’



Al Pacino takes a great pleasure listening to Opera. He has confessed in public that Julie Christie has always been his favorite actress.

Currently, he’s living in Beverly Hills, California, and has remained unmarried ever since.

Despite that, Pacino was in a relationship with her for seven years. They broke up in 2003. He also engaged in romantic relationships with Diane Keaton, Tuesday Weld, Marthe Keller, Lyndall Hobbs, Jill Clayburgh and Kathleen Quinlan.

He has a son and two daughters with Beverly D’Angelo, an actress, and singer.


After four nominations in Academy Awards for Best Actor, Al Pacino finally, won the OSCAR in 1992 for ‘Scent of a Woman’ directed by Martin Brest.  American Film Institute announced Al Pacino to be the 35th beneficiary of ‘AFI Life Achievement Award’ on 20th October 2006.

In addition to that, he also earned two Emmy awards for the films, ‘You Don’t Know Jack’ and ‘Angels in America,’ four Golden Globe Awards and two BAFTA Awards.
