Cameron was born on the 16th of August, 1954 in Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada. His father was an electrical engineer and his mother was an artist and nurse.

James went to Stamford Collegiate School during his childhood which lies in Ontario. He grew up in a place called Chippawa before moving to Brea, California with his family in 1971. He did his high school from Brea Olinda High School. Though James was interested in Physics and had enrolled at Fullerton College to pursue his interest in 1973, he later left the course to study English. However, he dropped out of the course even before the next year started. According to some sources, he did a major in physics from California State University.

Early Career

After that, he started doing various odd jobs to support his passion of being a filmmaker. He drove a truck to pay his bills. While he was struggling to break in as a screenwriter in the film industry, he discovered special effects and got completely fascinated by it.

He wrote his first short film titled Xenogenesis with two of his friends and shot it on 35 mm film. He got a job as a production assistant on a film in 1979. The film was titled Rock and Roll High School. However, he did not receive any credit for it. After that, he got an opportunity to work at Roger Corman Studios as a miniature model maker. He started getting works in several films as an art director, a production designer, and a special effects editor. After working under various departments for few years, James made his debut in the industry as a writer and director in 1981 with the sequel of the movie Piranha called Piranha II: The Spawning.

After making his first film as a director in 1981, he got his first blockbuster hit in 1984 with his film The Terminator. He wrote and directed this futuristic action-thriller which gave Arnold Schwarzenegger a completely new identity as an actor. He made its sequel in 1991 after almost seven years of its release. The sequel was titled Terminator II: Judgement Day which was also a huge success. After Terminator, he made numerous science-fiction films which printed billions of dollars at the Box office. The list of such films includes Aliens (1986) and The Abyss (1989).

His film Titanic which released in 1997 was another record-breaking hit and became the highest-grossing movie in the history. It was a romantic love story that combined the thrill of the sinking of the ship Titanic. It won eleven Academy Awards the next year. In 2009, another record-breaking movie titled Avatar released. It was also a film by James Cameron. He has been planning to make several sequences to the film. In addition to this, James has directed several short films and documentaries.

Career as a Producer

James has his own production company called Lightstorm Entertainment. He started working as a producer since his first short film. He went on to produce some of the record-breaking blockbusters in the history of cinema including Terminator 2 and Avatar. In addition to that, he has produced numerous documentaries, television series, and TV movie documentaries throughout his career.

James has been living in the United States of America since he moved with his family in 1971. However, he still remains a citizen of his native country Canada. Cameron has been chosen as the member of the NASA Advisory Council. He has been an advocate for the colonization of Mars through a non-profit organization called Mars Society.

Married Life

James did not have a steady marital relationship with his partners. He got married to Sharon Williams in 1978 which ended in 1984. After that, he has married four more times. The list of his former wives includes famous director Kathryn Bigelow (1989–1991) and Linda Hamilton (1997–1999). Before marrying Kathryn, he had been married to Gale Anne Hurd for four years from 1985 to 1989. He is currently in a marital relationship with Suzy Amis. They tied the knot in 2000.
