Jason Reitman is a Canada-America based screenwriter, producer, and also a film-maker. He is known best for his direction in the movie “Up in the Air”,  “Juno, Thank you for smoking” and “Young Adult”. Reitman is an influential screenplay writer and an excellent director. His work has been awarded many awards and also has been mentioned in nominations for different categories.

Early Life

Jason Reitman is the son of the actress Genevieve Robert and the famous comedy director and film producer, Ivan Reitman. He was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on October 19, 1977. He grew up with his two sisters. Catherine Reitman, also an actress is 3 years younger. Caroline Reitman, is 12 years younger and is a nurse.

Because of his father’s influence, he was always fascinated with movies and the process of movie making. As a child, he was a very shy kid who was a movie fan. He used to follow his dad around in the editing room. Jason learned many things there. He was influenced and inspired as he sat down and watched different movies being made.

Education

Jason attended Harvard-Westlake School, from where he graduated in the year 1995. He was involved in sports and athletic activities. In high school, he was a high jumper. He then joined Skidmore College where he planned on majoring in Pre-med studies. he later transferred to the University of Southern California to major in English or Creative writing.

Early Career

Reitman first started his career as a film-maker when he was still at his university.He started making short movies even though he was offered to make commercial feature films. He rejected the opportunity to direct “Dude, where’s my car?” two times. Instead, his first feature film was “Thank you for smoking”.  This movie was released in 2006.

Jason Reitman wrote and directed several short films. He produced his first short film with the money he gathered by selling ads in desk calendars. It was named “Operation” and was premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 1998.

Career

His first movie was a hit and gathered him much fame. Reitman then turned the novel of Christopher Buckley into a screenplay. It was a major success and Reitman’s fame grew more as a screenplay writer and as a director. It gathered more than $140 million worldwide. This movie was even nominated in two categories for Golden Globes. He then started working on his second film “Juno”, which premiered in 2007 Toronto Film Festival. This movie won awards and was mentioned in various categories as nominations as well.

After his second movie, he formed a production company named- Hard C Production along with his partner Daniel Dubiecki. The goal of this company was to produce unique and unusual films which would be independent but accessible. The company is set to produce “Banzai Shadowhands”. They also produced “Jennifer’s Body” a  major hit. It tells the story of a cheerleader who is possessed by a demon and starts feeding off the boys.

It also is the production company of the movie “Anatomy” which is about a bookstore clerk who finds a museum devoted to his life”. Later he persuaded his father, Ivan Reitman to buy the rights of the novel Up in the Air, which he later developed into a movie. It was released in the year 2009. This movie is considered one of his greatest achievement. He has also been involved in the direction and production of the thriller movie “Chloe”.

Jason Reitman Married Life

At the age of 16, he moved in with a woman 10 years older than him. He was still in high school at the time. They stayed together for 7 years until their separation.  Reitman then met his wife, Michele Lee. She was his next-door neighbor and a writer. They got married in the year 2000. Their daughter, Josie Reitman, was born in 2006. They separated after 10 years of being together. Reitman filed for divorce and announced that he was single from the year 2014 onwards.

Awards

During his filmography, his work has been mentioned on several occasions. He has won Independent Spirit Award for Best Screenplay, National Board of review Award, San Diego Film Critic Society Award, Norwegian International Film Festival Award. He also won Washington DC Area Film Critics Association Award for his film “Thank you for smoking”. Reitman also won Canadian Comedy Award, Cinema For Peace Award, Christopher Award for Feature Film, Grammy Award, Chairman;s Vanguard Award, Audience Choice Award etc for his film “Juno”.

In 2009 after the release of his next movie “Up in the Air” he again bagged several awards. Toronto Film Critics Association Award, Vancouver Film Critic Circle Award, Writer’s Guild Award are some of them . It also won Washington DC Area Film Critic Association Award. This movie was also nominated for Academy Award, BAFTA award, Chicago Film Critic Award, Best Foreign Film, Golden Globe Award. It was also mentioned in London Critic Award, Online Film Critic Award, etc.
