Julie Bowen Luetkemeyer is an American actress. She is known by the name of Julie Bowen. Bowen is best known for her role in Ed as Carol Vessey which aired from 2000 to 2004. Her portrayal of  Claire Dunphy in the comedy sitcom Modern Family of CBS is also considered to be one of her best works.

She has won 2 Primetime Emmy Award along with a total of 6 nominations.

Julie Bowen also made appearances in films like 1996’s Happy Gilmore, 2001’s Venus and Mars, 2007’s Sex and Death and 2011’s Horrible Bosses.

Early Life

Julie Bowen Luetkemeyer was born on 3rd March of 1970 in  Baltimore, Maryland, to mother  Suzanne and father, John Alexander Luetkemeyer. She was raised in  Ruxton-Riderwood, Maryland but spent part of her early year in Italy.

She is the second child among three daughters. Her elder sister is Molly Bowen, an interior designer and her young sister is  Annie Bowen, a doctor.


Bowen attended three different schools. She attended  Ruxton-Riderwood, Maryland first. She then attended Garrison Forest School and finally  St. George’s School.

Later, Bowen attended the  Brown University. She majored in  Italian Renaissance studies.

She also studied acting at Actor’s Institute.

Early Career

Bowen started her acting career in theater with plays like Lemon Sky and Stage Door when she was in college.


As an actress

Julie Bowen made a debut in television through 1992’s soap opera ‘Loving.’ In 1993, Bowen also made an appearance in  Class of ’96 which is a college drama.

In 1994, she played the title character in 1994’s Runaway Daughters as Angie Gordon. She also featured as Virginia Venit in 1996’s Happy Gilmore.

In 1996 and 1997, the actress also made an appearance in movie Municipality as Robin, and she played as Amy Finch in ‘An American Werewolf in Paris.’

In 1996, she also made a guest appearance in TV series Party of Five and Strange Luck. From the year 1998 to 1999, Bowen also has a recurring role in ER. She played the role of Roxanne Please.

Julie Bowen gained exposure from media for her performance in TV series ‘ED’ from 2000 to 2004. She played the role of  Carol Vessey who is a high school teacher.

In the following years from2005, up until  2007, Bowen made few guest appearances in Lost. She appeared in 5 episodes of the series as  Sarah Shephard. She also has recurring roles in TV series like Boston Legal and Weeds.

In 2009, Julie Bowen appeared in sitcom series Modern Family as Claire Dunphy. Her character is the mother of Alex Dunphy played by Ariel Winter, Haley Dunphy played by Sarah Hyland and Luke Dunphy played by Nolan Gould. In the series, her spouse is Phil Dunphy played by Ty Burrell.

In 2014, Bowen played the voice of Lil’ Dipper in Planes: Fire & Rescue. During the same year, she played the voice of herself in an episode of Family Guy.  She played herself in an episode of Better Things in the year 2016.

She is currently working on the movie Life of the Party which is expected to release in 2018.
