The American actor Samuel Jackson is one of the well-known faces in the film industry.

He currently has an estimated net worth amount of $170 Million. He is also the second highest all-time box office star with an average of $68.3 million per film.

Early Life

 

The actor was born on 1972 December 21, in Washinton D.C., United States, to his parents Elizabeth and Roy Henry Jackson. He was the only child and grew up in Tennessee.

Most of his childhood was spent with his mother as his father was mostly away.

His father, unfortunately, later died because of excess alcohol. His mother worked in a factory but then started working as a supply manager in a mental institution.

As a kid, he had a problem with his speech stuttering as he spoke.

Education

Jackson attended several schools to complete his primary school. He shifted to and from different segregated schools. But he finally completed his high school from the Riverside High School of Chattanooga.

He played the French Horn and Trumpet in his high-school orchestra. He then joined the Morehouse College in Atlanta to attain a degree in Marine Biology.

For his extra credits needed for his college, he joined the local acting group. There, he realized he had an interest in acting and later switched his major to Dramatic Arts. Jackson graduated in the year 1972 and even co-founded the group called- Just Us Theater.

Early Career

While in his college, he appeared in a version of the Threepenny Opera. This became his moment of realization that he wanted to pursue acting as his career.

He appeared in several stages plays like- Home and A Soldier’s Play. Jackson also appeared in several TV shows as well as films later on.

He made his official cinematic debut with the feature film Together For Days. After his appearance in the movie, he moved back to New York in 1976. He then played in two of the famous stage plays- The Piano Lesson and Two Trains Running.

Although his fame grew, at this point in his life, he got addicted to alcohol and cocaine. Because of this, he lost the part in both of the stages plays to other actors.

However, he did get the chance to play minor roles in School Daze, Do the Right Thing, Good Fellas and the TV show- The Cosby Show.

Career

Acting and Drug Addiction

While his small roles in films paid him well, he became more and more addicted to drugs. He even overdosed on heroin several times.

Later, he gave up heroin for cocaine. Because of this, his family kept him in a New York rehab clinic. After being successfully rehabilitated, he appeared in the film Jungle Fever as a crack, cocaine addict. The film got critically acclaimed, and the 1991 Cannes Film Festival even created a “Supporting Actor” award just for him.

This was a breakthrough in his future career. He played in several films after that, the most popular being- Amos and Andrews, Jurrasic Park, Patriot Games, Juice and National Lampoon’s Loaded Weapon 1.

Jackson surprised the critics with yet another role as Jules Winnfield in the Quentin Tarantino film- Pulp Fiction. It was later specified that the role of Jules was written specifically for him.

Success and Fame

The film Pulp Fiction was, however, his thirtieth film, but it did not fail to gain international recognition and praise by critics. He even received a Best Supporting Actor Nomination at the Academy Awards and Golden Globe Awards and won the BAFTA Awards.

Following his success in the film industry, he got cast in several more films. But his performance did not do well after he played roles in poor-performed films- Kiss of Death, The Great White Hype and Losing Isaiah.

But again, he proved the critics wrong with yet another box-office hit films- Die Hard with a Vengeance and A Time To Kill. For his contributions, he got his star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame on June 13, 2000.
